Noir Editing Session 9

Session Review

After listening to my current audio piece contemplating the final scene where the detective encounters the robot. I furiously browsed the internet determined to improve upon the ongoing refinement of creating foley that sounds like a giant, massive metallic robot walking.

Furthermore, watching Scorsese's the "Taxi Driver"  once more, the continuous narration of the character Travis; inspired the inclusion of my protagonist's thoughts throughout the audio, effectively immersing myself into the narrative.

Additionally, the final scene, the detective will sarcastically laugh to himself as the killer robot.'s approaches him.

Noir Editing Session 8

Session Review

Carrying from yesterday evening, I contemplated how I could create a heavy footstep for the killer robot with the concrete footstep I recorded previously.

The reason I wanted to edit an existing sound is that since the original footsteps were recorded with the Tascam and shotgun mic and not a phone. I could still possess a high quality of sound with the new heavy footstep sound.

Creating the footstep was a fun mixture of the elevator for the hydroponics as he moved his mechanical leg and the concrete footstep with bass applied for the foot impact. and once he confronts the detective it was the new edited elevator sound played in reverse and stretched to produce a cybernetic sound.

Noir Editing Session 7

Session Review

Different levels of reverb adds a nice touch to most foley sounds
Throughout the events of this evening session, besides inserting additional foley sounds to paint more of the story. I decided to edit each sound and try and make each sound like it was in a specific environment. Such as when the detective in the story enters the factory and applying a controlled amount of reverb to the footsteps I recorded in Friday's session.

Moreover, learning that I could simply highlight an individual sound and apply any desired effect, without it being applied to the rest of the sound, was incredibly useful.

Especially when editing, since I can shape each sound until I achieved the desired response.

Overall this session was worthwhile and allot more fun since I actually learned more techniques and acquainted myself with more of the adobe audition interface.

Foley Recording Session

Session Review

Proceeding from the peer review in the last session, the feedback received was surprisingly positive despite the entire narrative in the audio piece not entirely clear.

Moreover, after taking out the sound recording equipment the funny thing was physically setting up the shotgun microphone to the rest of the equipment was done with little trouble, however, figuring out like an alien how to even turn the Tascam DR-40 recorder on despite using it for other tasks such as the Motion Graphics sound design workshops was tedious.

Moreover, once I discovered how to operate the Tascam, the first order of business was to re-record most of the indoor foley sounds I recorded with a phone such as a rifle loading and additional sounds I needed such as the static radio, concrete footsteps and various other sounds I recorded for future use.

Overall, despite having to work quickly and improvise several of the intended sound effects I deeply enjoyed using the shotgun microphone and pistol grip since the quality of sound recorded with it is good enough to be placed in the existing noir audio track and stored in a sound library, for future projects requiring foley.

Peer Review & Noir Editing Session 7

Applying additional foley sounds
Session Review

After growing discouraged with my sound piece, my passion for the noire piece returned once I included some additional sound effects and a noire soundtrack which added a depth of mystery which is essential to the most noire detective story.

Continuing from the peer review, I decided to re-record a few of my foley sound effects with the Tascam DR-40 m audio recorder and a shotgun microphone. When I acquainted myself with the Tascam and equipment I was frustrated as to why I could not pick up any sound when I recorded however, I learned the issue was because I did not set the Tascam to record with the internal microphone (INT MIC) under the record settings.

Noir Editing Session 6

Session Review

During this short adobe audition editing session, I simply duplicated certain sounds such s the phone call in order to push the current duration of my sound piece and fill in the empty void of noise between each sound effect. Moreover, I wished to reverse the foley sound of the train engine in order for it to sound like the robot is powering up instead of powering down like the train engine.

However, despite my attempts at using feeble tricks such as duplicating generic sounds such as sighs and groans to push my audio track, I still need an extensive amount foley sounds recreated and imported such as the caller and detective phone conversation which should push the sound piece to at least another minute.

Noir Editing Session 5

Session Review

After editing my audio track I realised I need allot more foley sound effects for the second setting if the noire story and that is the industrial sound effects that will play as the detective explores the factory and encounters the robot.

Moreover, I decided to watch a video about the sound of the film "Real Steel". listening to some of the robotic sound effects especially as they walked was very inspirational and helped me conceive a few foley ideas for my own robot.

Noir Editing Session 3

Session Review

During today's class session, I consulted my lecturer Kevin on how to control what direction a sound effect was coming from in adobe audition. Kevin demonstrated that in order to control the direction a sound is coming from(panning) then I simply had to select an arrow next to the tracking toolset and drag the mouse and small arrow indicates the direction that sound is coming from.

Furthermore, he continued to demonstrate how to apply various effects to enhance my sound recordings, such as a foley sound of an elevator lift moving upwards and I plan to use that recording to intemperate the robot being activated.

So various effects were applied to that sound since originally the lift sounded very weak, so the effect was firstly normalized, this served to increase the volume of the sound and then s series of other effects were presented to me such as manipulating the decay and changing the type of environment the sound is heard in such as a cathedral, office, underwater which affects how the sound will travel and be heard.

Noir Editing Session 4

Session Review

Edited the clock foley sound effect today sn trie to normalize the sound effects in order to increase the volume of and pitch of the clock ticking.

But after trying to reduce the static noise between each ticking sound I decided to undo all of the edits made to the original sound and reduce the volume of noise using the normalize tool and set it to a low level of 4 which was enough of a raise for the sound effect to be loud enough.

Noir Editing Session 2

Session Review

During this session, I have finally begun structuring and importing some of the key sounds from my collection of foley sound effects, into Adobe Audition.

Furthermore, I have included additional sounds from my personal sound library in order to be the connective sounds for large transitions, such as the moment the detective in this sound piece comments to the radio broadcast and flicks his newspaper.

The sudden transition seemed unnatural although these subtle foley sounds such as a cough or sigh apply a natural tone to the scene.

Noir Sound Piece Research Cont'd

Session Review

This short session, simply consisted of browsing around the internet for inspiration that I could use as a stepping stone in constructing the sound of my killer robot for when the detective uncovers the killer robot inside the factory,.

Since my story is set in the 50s I want my robot to have an analogue sound of gears, heavy clanking metal and industrial sounds. After browsing around the film Zathura in the scene where the two children encounter the defective robot provided an excellent series of sound effects,

in particular when the robot moved.it sounded like tools being hit together and I thought I could record an elevator or lever moving as the robot moved each part of its body.

Noir Editing Session 1

Session Review

Throughout this afternoon, the session was merely organizing my recent studio recording placing them into my sound library before I begin to import the foley sounds into Soundtrack pro.

The reason I have decided to use soundtrack pro instead of logic is simply that soundtrack pro is available on most university computers and unfortunately, I don't own a copy of Logic X.

Noir Sound Piece Research

Session Review

During this evenings session, I continued to edit my noire sound piece script by watching films such s Sin City, Strangers on a Train and Kiss Me Deadly (1955).

Watching other noire films greatly improved the dialogue of my basic script and I have changed most of the story to make the threat more mysterious and the danger the detective faces will only be made obvious once he himself is confronted by it.

Sound Design Class Session 4: Short Story Contemplation

Session Review

During this afternoon session, I watched an intriguing and useful documentary on BBC radio four describing the sound of fear and the nature of sound.

Furthermore, I have decided to choose my noir factory idea; however, I discussed my concept with several classmates and the lecturer Kevin and currently I just need to build upon the story scenario. In addition, I decided to take story references from one of my favourite silent films Metropolis.

There are many industrial scenes in the film that are an excellent visual reference for will be happening sound-wise when my character ventures inside the industrial factory.

Sound Design Class Session 3: Contemplating on Final Oiece

Session Review

Continuing from my audio research, I was informed by my lecturer Kevin to choose three main ideas for my and describe what emotion and atmosphere I am trying to convey using no less than one hundred words each.

Getting aquatinted with Sound Track pro
My primary idea is to use my existing recorded sound effects of trains , car engines and other various machines to create a short story of either a detective hired by a client to investigate the disappearance of a local factory worker. The detective then travels to the factory location and inside the factory, the main character uncovers the production of either robot, war machines or doomsday device.

However, the reason why this is my primary concept is simply that after watching the documentary on Walle E. The sound designer Ben Berts used various objects such as a guitar string to record laser sound effects

The second concept that currently comes to my mind is of another bystander this time the bystander is in the wrong place in the wrong time and encounters murder and the murders notice them and hunt eh witness and it would be emotionally effective if the story ended with a cliff hanger.

The third idea is to change the sound effects and music of film in order to create a different tone to a particular scene or film trailer.  An effective example of this is a trailer where they change the music and edit the scenes to create a Mary Poppins horror trailer known as Scary Mary which was highly effective.

To conclude my fourth idea is to adapt a fairy tale possibly the tale of Red Riding Hood, Aladdin or of well-known novels such as Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland.

Furthermore, later during the session I opened the audio program Soundtrack Pro and attempted to learn its interface and utilities by creating a thirty-second sound piece conveying a certain atmosphere.

In addition, I ill need to organize and place my own foley sounds in categories similar to Logic Pro or Sound Track Pros sound library. Furthermore, the short piece I have created has an excellent atmosphere simply by listening to the Sounds Tracks library of sounds and currently it is developing into either an old western town or a haunted landscape.

Audio Equipment Research.

Session Review

During this weekend, I had a talk with a friend who was an audio enthusiast and we discussed the use and equality of surround sound. After experiencing an effective surround sound system I can indeed say that I will learn to edit the directions sounds direction in Adobe Audition.

Today's early morning session I was just researching and shopping around for good quality and affordable audio recorders such as the Tascam DR-05 or Zoom H1 seems to be portable and good enough for my foley work so I can capture industrial sounds from garages and factories.

If possible I will email my lecturer Kevin for further advice; however, I will simply talk to Kevin during the following Thursday class session and hear his opinion and hardware recommendations if I have not made a clear decision before then.

Class Session:2 Researching Sound Designers & Thoughts on Final Project

Session Review

During today's class session, my lecturer Kevin introduced me to a renowned sound designer know as  Ben Berts and after watching Ben Berts discuss the sound effect created for the film Walle, I made note of incredibly useful advice and terminology,

Moreover, I collected a number of production videos from two game development companies Rocksteady and Sucker Punch. From what I managed to collect both sound design teams displayed a creative and efficient use of foley sounds.

I decided to focus on the work of John Roesch a foley artist who worked on the sounds effects for Batman Arkham City. From what I observed they preferred to use traditional techniques compared to creating digital effects I imagine to produce a more realistic and organic sound.

The Arkham city team preferred to use analogue sound effects and my lecturer Kevin pointed out that they recorded one sound in 24 channels.

Moreover, as I re-familiarized myself with Adobe Audition and layered several foley sounds I recorded in the past and last weeks class session. In addition, while I listened to a collection of the vehicle and other electronic sounds I recorded I began to conceive a concept for my final audio piece which may consist of recording more industrial and engine sounds in order to create a sound piece depicting the atmosphere of a robot factory or starship factory most likely from Star Wars on the planet Corellia which would also be an excellent concept to work on.

Class Session:1 Introduction To Sound Design

Session Review
This afternoons sound design lesson was useful since I had learned a useful piece of terminology known as the  4'33 sound associated with a composer named John Cage. I can understand the meaning that both John Cage and the lecturer Kevin were conveying since at the theatre and cinema just before the main show begins I hear a few minutes of ambient sounds in the auditorium. In addition, the lecturer then gave us a small exercise where we had to listen to the ambient sounds around us outside, this was p emphasize the many sounds in our environment and how each one can be used for a specific emotion or convey a certain message.

Furthermore, I joined this module in order to expand on the basic knowledge I had of sound design since I had previously worked with the following audio software reason, logic pro, adobe audition and i recorded foley sounds at my time in college and used these sound effects for my UDK deathmatch level which was a canal facility and imported each sound and placed each ambient sound next to key environmental areas such as burst water pipes, generators and waterfalls.

Moreover, I  aim to learn how to create higher quality and improve on layering different sound effects which can be used for future animation clips and for existing projects which consists of character and more ambient environmental sound effects.
